The podium at the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix was pure poetry. Max Verstappen, the four-time World Champion, stood on the top step after claiming another victory this season in Mexico City. Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time World Champion, stood second. And beside them in third place was Kimi Antonelli, who just made Formula One history.

At age 20, the Mercedes driver had become the youngest Drivers’ World Champion in the sport’s history, a record previously held by Sebastian Vettel since 2010. And for Italy, it marked the end of a 73-year wait for another Champion, the last being Alberto Ascari in 1953.

It’s an extraordinary achievement for a driver competing in his second Formula One season. And that’s exactly what made the occasion especially fitting for the company Antonelli found himself keeping. To one side stood Verstappen, who had dominated much of Formula One’s recent history. To the other stood Hamilton, whose very departure from Mercedes set Antonelli’s extraordinary career into motion. It was a podium of the sport’s past, present, and future. And for Antonelli, it was the culmination of hope and hype two years in the making.

Two Years Ago - The Impossible Shoes to Fill

When Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes for Ferrari in February 2024, it was rather difficult to imagine who could succeed him. It was never going to be a run-of-the-mill driver market exercise… Then came a teenage Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a Mercedes junior since his karting days, who had attracted considerable attention through his rapid progression. By the time Mercedes announced him as Hamilton’s successor in August 2024, he’d bypassed Formula 3 entirely and was competing in Formula 2. He was just 18 years old.

It was a gutsy decision then, even by Formula One standards. There was plenty of excitement, but at the same time there was a question of whether Mercedes, namely team principal Toto Wolff, was expecting too much of someone so young. Potential and performance, after all, are two very different things. Stepping into the seat of any formidable driver, particularly Lewis Hamilton, was going to be anything but easy.

The Perfect Successor?

Two years later, the question of whether Wolff made the right call seems to have answered itself.

At just 20 years and 68 days old, Kimi Antonelli has accomplished what many drivers have spent their entire careers pursuing - nine Grand Prix victories in 2026, a maiden World Championship, and a place in Formula One’s history books. And as though penned by an author seeking to cement a parallel between characters, Antonelli achieved his first championship in his second season, just as Hamilton did in 2008.

Much of the conversation about the Italian driver between 2024 and 2025 centered on whether he could adequately replace Hamilton. But perhaps the brilliance of Mercedes’ decision was never about finding another Lewis Hamilton.

Kimi Antonelli didn’t have to replicate Hamilton’s career, driving style, or personality to justify his appointment, nor did he have to erase his predecessor's legacy. He simply had to establish his own identity on the track and his own achievements. And as a World Champion, he did exactly that.

Mercedes found something truly remarkable. They didn’t just find a worthy successor to one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time; they discovered a Champion who has developed a legacy independent of the seat he’s inherited. And now he joins Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Fernando Alonso among the World Champions on the grid.

What Now?

There will undoubtedly be conversations about next year, and the seasons after that - how many more championships he might win, whether he can defend his title, and what kind of legacy he may eventually leave behind.

My opinion? Once a Champion, always a Champion. No matter what happens after this, nothing and no one can take away this achievement or the records he’s broken from Antonelli.

But for now, those questions can wait. In the meantime, we should appreciate the image of Antonelli standing on the podium in Mexico City as Champion alongside the very man whose seat he inherited.

Mercedes found its perfect successor, Formula One found its youngest Drivers’ Champion, and Kimi Antonelli has come into the seat in his own right.
